چکیده

This paper presents an analysis of bound variable pronouns in English using Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammar. Bound variables are represented as multi-component sets, composing in delayed tree-local derivations. We propose that the observed anti-locality restriction on English bound variables can be for-malised in terms of a constraint on the delay in the composition of the bound variable multi-component set. While most cases are captured in a derivation making use of two simultaneous delays, maintaining weak equivalence with flexible composition, our analysis is open to derivations with an unlimited number of simultaneous delays.

Modelling the ziji Blocking Effect and Constraining Bound Variable Derivations in MC-TAG with Delayed Locality

MC-TAG derivations using delayed locality (i.e. non set-local composition) have been used to model long distance binding in natural language. In this paper, I explore the possibility within Synchronous TAG that tree sets composing via delayed locality may have many possible syntactic derivations for a single semantic form. Using the Mandarin (Chinese) anaphor ziji as a test case, I show that th...

Using synchronous tree adjoining grammar to model the typology of bound variable pronouns

This paper presents a novel analysis of bound variable anaphora using Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammar (STAG), a pairing of a Tree Adjoining Grammar (TAG) for syntax and a TAG for semantics. While a bound variable pronoun can occur at a distance from its binder, as in ‘Every girli believes that shei is intelligent,’ languages vary, though in a limited way, as to how near or far from its binde...

Non-local Right Node Raising: an Analysis using Delayed Tree-Local MC-TAG

In this paper, we show that the analysis of right-node-raising (RNR) in coordinate structures proposed in Sarkar and Joshi (1996) can be extended to non-local RNR if it is augmented with delayed tree locality (Chiang and Scheffler, 2008), but not with flexible composition (Joshi et al., 2003). In the proposed delayed tree-local analysis, we define multicomponent (MC) elementary tree sets with c...

Delayed Tree Locality and the Status of Derivation Structure

While the derived trees yielded by TAG derivations are uncontroversially taken to correspond to phrase structure, the status of TAG derivation structures as more than a record of TAG operations is less certain. An attractive possibility is to interpret the derivation structure as some representation of semantic meaning, such as a dependency analysis. However, the literature has identified cases...

An Application of Lexicalized Grammars in English-Persian Translation

Increasing the domain of locality by using Tree Adjoining Grammars (TAG) caused some applications, such as machine translation, to employ it for the disambiguation process. Successful experiments of employing TAG in French-English and Korean-English machine translation encouraged us to use it for another language pairs with very divergent properties, Persian and English. Using Synchronous TAG (...
